on 06/29/2007 Not all it's cracked up to be. I was really looking forward to going here (it was for a special occasion) but I was (unfortunately) very disappointed. Great service, great ambiance, but the food wasn't that great. Tie and jacket required.
Food: this is where 21 falls flat. The quality of the food was great, and you get a good-sized portion, but it just doesn’t taste that great. It’s in no way bad, but it’s not amazing either. I had the lobster salad for dinner and I was very unimpressed. It’s cold (I was expecting hot), and there was not enough dressing. It was mostly greens with two lobster claws on top (I was expecting some tail too) and a few cherry tomatoes. One of my guests didn’t like his steak that much. It was good quality beef, it just didn’t taste amazing. The crab cakes were good, but nothing special. The caviar was very good, as expected. The wine list was nice, but there were very few inexpensive wines.
Service: impeccable. The waiter was quick, efficient, and helpful, while still being virtually invisible (I HATE when the waiters interrupt my meal/conversation.) He anticipated our needs and didn’t forget or mess up anything. One of my guests didn’t like his steak (it was a personal preference, there was nothing wrong with it), but he didn’t complain. The waiter noticed he wasn’t eating, asked what was wrong, comped his meal, and gave us a complementary bowl of truffles.
Price: Very expensive. Don’t eat here if you’re on a budget – make sure you can splurge. When I ate here, we were a party of 6 and the bill was about 00 (yes, thousand) without the tip. However, we are drinkers and liquor was probably about half of the bill, and we ordered caviar. Without all of that I would say the bill was probably about 00 for 6 people. Not worth it for the food you get.
Ambiance: very upscale and classy. Everything is dark wood, dimly lit, and quiet. It is in NO way casual. Tie and jacket are required. People that are used to more casual, laid-back dining may find it stuffy. It reminded me of the opulent, old money, very Vanderbilt feel of Newport, RI. The dining room in the wine cellar is beautiful – It needs to be reserved ahead of time if you want to eat in it, but if you eat upstairs, just ask your waiter if he can give you a little tour of it after your meal. It’s great for people who are into history too because it is left intact the way it was when it was used as a speakeasy during the prohibition.
Overall: If you are looking for great food, this is a no. If you are looking for great service and ambiance, this is a definite yes. If you are looking for the whole package, pass on this one. |
